One of the great things about living in Bloomington right now is the self-awareness that continues to grow in our local tech community. The Indiana University School of Informatics, which encompasses both computer science and a multidisciplinary informatics program, isn’t quite a decade old. Bloomingpedia recently celebrated their second anniversary as one of the largest city wikis around. The site is powered by Suso.org and managed by a council that includes Mark Krenz and Chris Eller (whose photography is used in the banners of this site), both of whom are expected to attend our Startup Weekend gathering on February 8-10. We are also home to Cook, a leading developer of medical devices.
As a byproduct of efforts in the past year to identify local bloggers and make use of new services like Twitter, Bloomington started having Geek Dinners last fall. We have another one coming up on January 30 starting at 6p at El NorteƱo on Walnut Street. From the BGD blog:
We’ll have some Mexican, a little beer and talk tech - and there’s a lot of tech to talk this time around as the Bloomington Startup Weekend will be February 8th - 10th. People will get together and try to create an entire company from start to finish in a single weekend. Should be pretty amazing. What’s your idea for what the company should build? Kick around some ideas on the 30th!
Ben Fulton, the man behind this recurring event, also vows that “you Envisage folks will have to sit next to grad students” to encourage more mingling.
Before we spend 54 hours together in February, finish off this month with some conversation and future company brainstorming with the local Geeks.
